The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) today announced an agreement with the Renewable Energy Assurance Limited (REAL) to support the implementation and ongoing operation of the Canadian Low‑Emission Energy Registry (CLEER), a new national system designed to identify and track the environmental attributes of biomethane and other low‑emission energy sources, including hydrogen.
CLEER will provide a robust, transparent framework for the creation, management and retirement of digital certificates representing the environmental attributes of low‑emission energy. The registry is intended to support market confidence, policy development and investment in low‑emission fuels across Canada.
Under the agreement, REAL will provide advisory, technical and information technology services to support the development and delivery of the CLEER. REAL operates the Green Gas Certification Scheme in the United Kingdom and brings established expertise and operational experience directly relevant to the Canadian context.
In addition to supporting implementation, REAL will also provide ongoing technical and user support for the registry and ongoing management of the certification scheme once the CLEER becomes operational.
“This agreement represents an important step in advancing credible, consistent and transparent tracking of low‑emission energy in Canada,” said a CGA representative. “REAL’s proven experience in administering a mature biomethane certification scheme will help ensure that the CLEER is built on internationally informed best practices while reflecting Canada’s unique market and policy needs.”
A representative of REAL added, “We are pleased to work with the CGA on the development of the CLEER. Establishing a trusted system to track environmental attributes is a key enabler of low‑emission energy markets, and we look forward to applying our experience to support Canada’s energy transition.”
